Preface. Most attempts at determining species of the Lecanora gibbosa-group, in the subgenus Aspicilia, have failed owing to the incomplete knowledge of what the old names, as gibbosa, laevata, obscurata etc., really meant, and no one has hithero tried to bring order into this confusion of names and species through a careful examination of the authenic specimens and a comparision with those described at later times.
