The Film Music of Georges AuricOpis:As a young man Georges Auric was a member of "Les Six", a group of composers committed to revolutionising French music in the 1920s. In the 30s he mixed concert works with film scores for Jean Cocteau and Rene Clair, coming to England in 1945 to write music for Caesar and Cleopatra, a thrilling and spectacular suite from which opens this album. This score marked the beginning of a period in which the Frenchman was to write music for some of the most indelibly British movies ever made, ten of which are represented on this anthology. Here are richly melodic suites for the classic Ealing comedies: The Titfield Thunderbolt, The Lavender Hill Mob and Passport to Pimlico. The Innocents features the haunting voice of Anthea Kempston, while Mary Carewe is the soprano on Moulin Rouge, the instantly recognisable theme from which remains Auric's best-known work. Dead of Night is a virtuoso maelstrom of terror, while the almost quarter of an hour from It Always Rains on Sundays offers a complex musical tapestry woven with dark romantic colours. There are 72 minutes of great film music on this album, over an hour of which has never been previously released. The sound has a warmth which suits Auric's musical personality well, while the performances by the BBC Philharmonic are vigorously committed.
